Get prepared for EV and Hybrids

Increasing moves towards a carbon-neutral future has put a spotlight on EVs and hybrids and Garages that take advantage of this as a service now, should see the investment pay off in the not too distant future.

The government has committed to a ban on the sale of new diesel, petrol and hybrid vehicles by 2035, in a move set to transform the make-up of the UK vehicle parc. But while hybrids have been around for more than 12 years, less than 5% of technicians in the UK are qualified to service them according to the IMI.

The independent aftermarket is largely set up for vehicles with internal combustion engines and remains immature when it comes to alternatively fuelled options. Lots of work must sometimes be carried out to enhance a technician’s technical confidence and equip them with the skills and systems they need to take advantage of the opportunity represented by EVs and hybrids while they remain in their infancy. This means garages won’t miss out when the balance tips and alternative fuels become mass-market.

Part of this is tackling the perception that becoming EV and hybrid-ready is a big financial commitment, when the total cost of investment in training, tools and equipment for one technician totals around £2,000. With the average cost of an EV or hybrid service typically costing £300, garages can easily generate significant return on investment very quickly. With our Auto Education Academy Training we aim to make sure you and your garage are set up, taking the three main considerations into account to get you ready. These are:

  • Training requirements
